The trivial round

‘The trivial round, the common task
Will furnish all we need to ask.’
Isaac Watts

It’s the daily fuss that gets him down.
‘Darling can you sort out that drain.
It’s blocked again.’ Then there is the
Nasty business of the slow-worms
In the flower bed or removing the
Bloodied carcasses of mice and voles
Which the wretched cat has left
Beneath the kitchen table.
That and the washing-up routine.

On her side it’s the constant wondering
About what to cook for supper;
What is there left in the freezer?
And has he got clean pants for tomorrow?
Will he be cross that I’ve forgotten
To put petrol in the car and he’s got
To leave early? Worst of all, even though
The kids have grown and got some of their own,
There’s never an end to that worry!

So is just a case of share and share alike -
All things being equal? The trouble is they’re
Not. He’s good with a jigsaw; she’s great
With secateurs. So it’s no use getting him
To prune the roses or letting her loose in the
Workshop and hoping it will turn out right
On the day. These arguments are as recondite
As those about equal pay. So love one another!
And rub along as best you may.
