66 Uncollected

Text

Early on I wrote many of those:
Theses better said in prose,
Buttressing my defences
With literary references
In order to amuse,
Getting my irony in first
To parry the views
Of those who might
Think my verse too tight,
Or lacked originality.

But in the end I found
I’d not the right sound
For rhetorical effusions
And obscure allusions.
Better to use
My normal voice
And say what I meant,
Trust what my Muse
Had sent,
And shun pedantry!
