Synaesthetic Metaphors When I see her smile, a fragrance Clouds my vision, so I sense A fresh magnolia bud slowly Unfolding to reveal greeny-white Petals so succulent I could eat them. Its perfume sounds a lemony note On top of an insistent nectar base That feels like velvet. When my cheek felt the skin At the nape of her neck I could taste the Seven Stars and when she Turned to kiss and our lips touched For the first time I could feel Lightning explode as it lit up a horizon Far beyond the sound of the sea, Even with my eyes shut. Her laughter fell on my skin; A fleeting mist that took me unaware. And I recalled an eddy in the breeze That caught drifts of spray and sunshine As they tumbled from a fountain At the Villa d’Este and doused us both. A rainbow lasting but a moment Mingled with her voice. But the wind Changed direction in a sudden shift And the tinkling of the water Shone upon my ears once more As her amusement Softened to a smile I could almost touch.
